Merci!

CHIREWA danced around Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong with one tap of the ball. His resolute performance was undone by that elegant tap of the ball, a slight teaspoon from our star boy!

With bated breath, Zimbabweans waited for a memory that will forever be etched onto their minds; a well-placed, world class goal that beat the already sprawling Stanley Nwabali who was in goals for Nigeria.

In a moment, the wild 3-0 to 5-0 score lines that had been predicted by most of Nigeria’s 227.9 million strong population became what 19th century linguists referred to as opium induced pipe dreams.

Merci Chirewa.

Emmanuel Jalai, now nicknamed Hybrid or for those who endured the late 2000s hunger, Jolly Juice, did to Alex Iwobi what he will share with his colleagues at English Premier League side Fulham.

He will call Ligue 1 side Nantes forward Simon Moses to help him convince those in England that a small boy from poor Dynamos shut them out as easily as taking candy from babies.

Chipopi exceeded expectations, not just against Nigeria even when he debuted in Durban when the Warriors played Benin. He wanted to outrun, tire and destroy.

Merci Jalai.

24-year-old Munashe Garan’anga will have a lot to tell his grandkids about this match about 30 or so years from now.

In the meantime, he has Zimbabwe’s blessing to brag about how Serie A stars Samuel Chukwueze (AC Milan) and Ademola Lookman (Atalanta) almost begged for him to make a way as he stood firm semusoja Sanyatwe.

Garan’anga took no prisoners in Uyo; not even poor Chukwueze’s huffing and puffing could save him from the 1.68-metre-tall Copenhagen defender whose answer seemed to be a simple NO whenever the two had the ball.

Merci Munashe.

Experience is the teacher of all things, said Julius Ceasar many moons ago, as if he knew Sekuru Gudo would teach Victor Osimhen one day.

Despite his 74th minute low header, Osimhen learnt things; he can now go around telling his colleagues of the experience he has after an encounter with Washington Arubi.

Osimhen was denied left, right and centre. He could not believe his eyes as a snap shot within the first 10 minutes was punched out, as a sly shot was tipped sideways and the double save Arubi pulled off as we fought hard.

Arubi left his heart on the pitch on that Monday evening, whoever doubted beheld the scars on his hands touched them and believed!

Merci Arubi.

“We showed that we don’t give up and I think with three more minutes we would have come away with a win,” said Warriors coach Michael Nees.

“We showed we can play football; we didn’t park the bus. Nigeria started aggressively and wanted to end the game quickly but it didn’t work out. We resisted, we showed resilience.”

No lie detected!

Merci Nees.

An unimaginable class act had this game been played on the terraces of Godswill Akpabio Stadium where thousands gave outrageous permutations.

A very imaginable class act for 16 million Zimbabweans who knew we had Wolverhampton Wanderers star Marshall Munetsi, Mamelodi Sundowns’ Divine Xolani Lunga, superstar Khama Billiat, Soccer Star of the Year Walter Musona, Huddersfield’s starlet Tawanda Maswanhise and a bench full of stars that can stand toe-to-toe with any one of their Igwes on theirs.

Merci to our brave Warriors.
